New to Mindfulness

New to mindfulness? Start here. Janet Chavez, founder of KW Mindfulness, guides you through the foundations of meditation — drawn from her own journey of healing from autoimmune and neurological illness and her training as a Chopra Center Certified Meditation Instructor. The sections below walk you through what meditation is, why it matters, and how to begin a simple daily practice.

What Meditation Actually Is

Meditation is the practice of listening to your own silence and connecting to the infinite power within you. It is not about stopping thoughts — it is about noticing them without attaching meaning, so the mind can rest. Over time, this practice helps unlearn the mental conditioning that keeps us reactive and overwhelmed.

Primordial Sound & the 'So Hum' Mantra

Primordial sound meditation, rooted in the ancient Vedanta tradition of India, uses natural vibrations to help the mind release its tendency to assign meaning to everything. A personal vibration can be determined using Vedic mathematics based on birth location, time, and moon position. As a starting point, Janet introduces the mantra 'so hum' — a simple sound to anchor your attention and quiet the mind's constant stream of 65,000–75,000 thoughts each day.

Why It Matters

Benefits of a daily practice

  • Reduce stress and regulate stress hormones for better overall well-being
  • Enhance self-awareness and make choices from a place of wholeness and integrity
  • Build the discipline of presence — like building muscle, through regular practice
  • Quiet the mind's daily stream of 65,000–75,000 thoughts
  • Improve health and well-being, as Janet experienced firsthand in her own healing journey
  • Serve others more fully by first tending to your own inner state

Make It a Habit

Incorporating it into your day

  1. 1Set aside 30–40 minutes each morning to meditate — before engaging with technology or tasks.
  2. 2Meditate again in the afternoon or evening, ideally before dinner, for a second reset.
  3. 3Create a dedicated space at home — even a small corner — with a cushion, candle, and incense to anchor the practice.
  4. 4Sit comfortably and focus on your breath; try Ujjayi (victorious) breath or alternate nostril breathing to settle the nervous system.
  5. 5Use the mantra 'so hum' silently to anchor your attention when the mind wanders.
  6. 6When thoughts arise, notice them without attaching meaning — gently return to the breath or the mantra.
  7. 7Practice daily to build the habit; consistency matters more than length of any single session.

Session Recaps

Setting a Weekly Intention

Highlights from each Monday session — a short look back at the word of the week, the meditation, and a prompt to carry the intention forward.

Janet led a meditation centered on the weekly intention “compassion,” exploring its application toward oneself first and then outward toward others. She guided a practice aimed at promoting compassion, love, and kindness, inviting participants to cultivate gratitude and awareness throughout. Janet closed with the reminder that serving others with kindness and compassion shifts one's frequency and attracts positive experiences.

Highlights

  • Setting a one-word weekly intention around “compassion”
  • Cultivating compassion toward yourself as the foundation for extending it to others
  • Guided meditation to promote compassion, love, and kindness
  • Practicing gratitude and awareness throughout the week
  • Serving others with kindness and compassion as a daily intention
  • Compassion shifting your frequency and attracting positive experiences

Carry It Forward

“Where in your week can you lead with compassion — toward yourself first — and how would kindness in that moment shift what comes back to you?”
